Dr Dave Cockerill, Biology Director, has been named the Global Salmon Initiative’s ‘member of the month’ for January 2025. The monthly profiles showcase the invaluable contributions made by members to GSI’s work to drive continuous improvement in sustainability and animal welfare in the farmed salmon sector.
A qualified veterinarian with more than 25 years of experience tending to the welfare of aquatic livestock, Dave plays a lead role in developing and delivering Bakkafrost Scotland’s approach to fish health and welfare as part of the company’s commitment to best practice.
Dave said: “Bakkafrost Scotland has been engaged with the GSI since its inception. Collaboration is essential to improve the health and welfare of the salmon we farm. “The GSI provides a unique global platform for dialogue on welfare innovations, and an enabling environment for best practice sharing on critical evolutions in our operations.”
He added: “The Bakkafrost Scotland team was proud to share the new FLS systems for the treatment of sea lice and improving gill health, and showcase its potential in boosting sustainability and welfare improvements in other regions too, benefitting the aquaculture sector as a whole.”
