Citizenship Award trophy donated for school prizegiving
A new school trophy donated by Bakkafrost Scotland has been presented for the first time at an end of year prizegiving ceremony.
The Citizenship Award is presented to the pupil at Sgoil Ùige on the Isle of Lewis who has excelled in showing leadership qualities, kindness and compassion over the academic year.
The first winner was named as Ciaran MacDonal, who was presented with the trophy by Bakkafrost Scotland Marine Site Manager Thomas Begg.
Thomas said: “It was my pleasure to donate the Citizenship Award trophy. At Bakkafrost Scotland, our values include respecting each other and celebrating those who go above and beyond.
“Ciaran clearly set a positive example during the school year and it is good to see those qualities being recognised.”
Head teacher Ann-Marie Beaton said the prizegiving ceremony has been added to the school calendar following feedback from the Pupil Council.
She added: “One of the issues we initially faced was there being no trophies available to us to give out, so we reached out to companies and organisations in the area to see if they could help us with that. The response we received was phenomenal.
“Many of the awards are for academic or sporting excellence, but we also wanted to recognise qualities like leadership, kindness and compassion – the qualities and values that reflect the ethos of the school. The Citizenship Award enables us to do that.”
